Come mix with other BarCampers before the weekend event really kicks into gear. Lothlorien is providing a relaxing castle environment to play Rock Band on an entire wall! BYOB. Please help out and bring some snacks. There will be open wifi, a fire pit going and canoes if people are interested. This is one of our best chances to talk without having to worry about missing some of the awesome sessions that will be happening.

Check in starts at 10am and a potluck lunch starts at 11. Madison’s farmers market will be open about 2 feet from XB so feel free to pick up food there. (The 12 year cheddar is amazing!) Sessions will kick in at 12 noon and go until dinner. Dinner will be provided so if you have dietary needs contact Abraham. After dinner hang around as long as you want. There will be much late night hacking and some impromptu sessions.

Wikis for activists

Since 2003, the Center for Media and Democracy has sponsored Sourcewatch, an online directory of the "people, issues and organizations shaping the public agenda." Sourcewatch is powered by Mediawiki (the same software that powers Wikipedia) and is designed to serve as a wiki-based, collaborative research tool for journalists, activists and anyone else who is interested in understanding and influencing politics and public policy. Projects that are part of Sourcewatch include:

Congresspedia, an encyclopedia of every member of Congress, candidates for Congress, legislative, campaign donors, etc.
CoalSwarm, a shared information tool for groups and individuals on issues such as coal mining, coal-fired electrical generation, coal-based synthetic fuels, etc.
TobaccoWiki, an online research project that explores the millions of pages of previously-secret, internal tobacco industry documents now posted on the Internet.
The Nuclear Issues portal, which studies the individuals, lobby groups, PR companies and trade associations involved with the nuclear power and and nuclear weapons industry.
Front Groups, a collaborative project with Consumer Reports Webwatch to identify front groups which pretend to be independent while actually representing hidden special interests.
The Superdelegate Transparency Project, which compiled information on the role of superdelegates in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary.

CMD research director Sheldon Rampton and senior web developer Blake Hall will describe the origins of Sourcewatch, discuss experiences and lessons learned to date. He will also describe upcoming plans to add social networking features to Sourcewatch and will ask workshop participants for advice on how to improve Sourcewatch as a collaborative research tool.

Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA)

Making your website accessible is essential so that everyone can use it (and is required by law in many cases). However, some functionality currently used in Web sites is not available to some users with disabilities, especially people who rely on screen readers and people who cannot use a mouse. W3C's WAI-ARIA addresses these accessibility challenges, by providing a framework for adding attributes to identify features for user interaction, how they relate to each other, and their current state.
WAI-ARIA defines new ways for functionality to be provided to assistive technology. It includes technologies to map controls, Ajax live regions, and events to accessibility application programming interfaces (APIs), including custom controls used for rich Internet applications. WAI-ARIA techniques apply to widgets such as buttons, drop-down lists, calendar functions, tree controls (for example, expandable menus), and others.

Catching up with Accessibility: The Basics Quickly

Accessibility is a key aspect of high-quality websites. Accessibility is about real people using and creating the Web. We'll demo how accessibility makes your website available and more usable to people with disabilities; to people using mobile phones, PDAs, and other such devices; to people with low bandwidth connections (which is more of a problem than many are aware of in the U.S. and throughout the world); and to seniors, an increasingly important demographic.
There's been a lot of attention lately on the more complicated aspects of accessibility, but if you're missing the basics that's not going to help you. This session runs through the easy things and the most important things you can do now to get your project up to speed on accessibility. You'll get code and design examples, and see/hear how assistive technologies handle them. We'll look at why accessibility is vital, and how accessible sites are more effective for all — including site developers and users.

A very, very introductory course in programming. No specific language is taught, instead, the ideas that you can take with you to almost any programming language, and that you’ll see in just about any piece of code, are introduced.

The very rough outline of what will be covered:

variables, and possibly types in a generic sense (ints, floats,

strings, arrays)

blocks, and to a minor extent, scope in terms of blocks
flow control (if, while, do-while)
boolean logic (without getting too complicated, related to previous topic)
loops (for, foreach, link back into while & do-while)
functions

We leave more advanced topics, including objects/classes, for the Learn Python session, and hopefully this session will be complimentary.

Build a Board Game

In this “Build a Board Game” session we will discuss whether Ruby on Rails is suitable for large-scale deployments. No, not really.

We shall design and construct a board game in the allotted time. I will bring some paper, dice, markers and other various items for us to use. If there are too many people, we’ll break into groups.

I’ve been a web consultant for more than 10 years developing primarily in Java environments but also 2 years in Rails and a year in the early days of VB. I’ve created storefronts, email, and HR systems in Rails and inventory, project, HR, partner programs, and product and issue tracking systems in Java.

I would love to see a more open, trusting, and trustable environment both on the internet and in real life. Also a more flexible and adaptable lifestyle than the employee-mindset most of us have gotten used to over the years.

Who can you trust? Why?

I am extremely interested in the social aspects of the web, but am very cautious about privacy, data retention and usage, and what we can actually call our own in the digital and physical worlds. I don’t trust Google (and refuse all google-analytics requests), nor any other ISP that says they own all of our emails, preferences, and appointments.

Lively Kernel: A Webtop/RIA/IDE in 1OK of Javascript

The Sun Labs Lively Kernel is a new web programming environment developed at Sun Microsystems Laboratories. The Lively Kernel supports desktop-style applications with rich graphics and direct manipulation capabilities, but without the installation or upgrade hassles that conventional desktop applications have. The system is written entirely in the JavaScript programming language, a language supported by all the web browsers, with the intent that the system can run in commercial web browsers without installation or any plug-in components. The system leverages the dynamic characteristics of the JavaScript language to make it possible to create, modify and deploy applications on the fly, using tools built into the system itself. In addition to its application execution capabilities, the Lively Kernel can also function as an integrated development environment (IDE), making the whole system self-sufficient and able to improve and extend itself dynamically.

This will be a quick demo followed by a discussion.

Grant Rettke

Grant Rettke is a software developer whose mission is to produce solutions that enable success and deliver value to his clients. For the past seven years he has worked in the insurance, logistics, banking, and manufacturing industries, serving numerous roles ranging from developer and tester to application and technical architect. Currently Grant is working for a local insurance company to define their new technical architecture. Before that Grant was performing system integration for Wells Fargo, making sure that parcels got the correct routing information at FedEx, and helping a local service company to keep track of inspections using hand-held computers.

You could say that Grant is an “eternal student of life”. He believes that “wisdom begins in wonder”, which motivates him to always keep learning. He holds a B.S in Math, Statistics, and Computer Science and a M.S. in Computing from Marquette University.

When he is not working, he loves to speak at local conferences, post thought-intriguing posts to his web log, study Scheme (the worlds most fun programming language, ask him why!), play guitar, walk, read, and most important of all, spend time with his family.
